Folly Beach Wedding Guidelines

Planning a beach wedding at Folly Beach? We want your ceremony to be beautiful, enjoyable, and respectful of the beach and the community. There are several local rules that couples and vendors should know before planning a wedding on the sand.

Important Things to Know About Beach Weddings

1. Beach access is free. There is no fee to use the beach for a ceremony. However, beach areas are public, so you cannot reserve a section of the sand or require other beachgoers to move.

2. Larger weddings require approval.Wedding ceremonies with more than 25 people must be reviewed and approved by the Special Events Committee. Be sure to allow enough time to complete the permit process before your wedding date.

3. Consider the time of year and location.During the busy months of May through October, weddings are discouraged in the area between 3rd Street East and 3rd Street West because the beach can become crowded. Any event in this area must also leave sufficient space for lifeguards and beach concession operations.

4. Keep pathways clear.Wedding ceremonies and decorations cannot block pedestrians, beach patrol vehicles, public walkways, or access points leading to the beach.

5. Beach receptions are not permitted. The beach may be used for your wedding ceremony, but wedding receptions cannot be held on the beach.

6. Alcohol and glass containers are prohibited.Alcoholic beverages cannot be possessed or consumed on the beach. Glass containers and cans are also prohibited. Non-alcoholic drinks may be brought in a cooler, but they must be poured into an appropriate paper or plastic cup rather than consumed directly from the container.

7. Keep the celebration quiet.Amplified music and excessive noise are not permitted on the beach. Plan your ceremony with the peaceful surroundings and other beach visitors in mind.

8. No fireworks or open flames.Fireworks, bonfires, tiki torches, and other open fires are not allowed. Gas grills are permitted under the applicable rules.

9. Decorations and equipment must be removed.Items such as chairs, arbors, flowers, decorations, tents, and ceremony structures must be removed from the beach before sunset or before the incoming tide reaches them—whichever happens first. Items left overnight may be removed and confiscated by the city.

10. Choose environmentally friendly ceremony tosses. If you plan to include a flower or other toss during your ceremony, only environmentally safe materials are permitted. Options can include real flowers, flower petals, or birdseed. Rice, balloons, and ashes are not permitted.

11. Use approved beach access points.Guests and vendors should enter the beach through a public walkover. Access through a private walkover is only permitted when authorization has been granted for the event.

12. Vehicles are not permitted on the beach.Motorized vehicles, including golf carts, cannot be driven on the beach.

13. Additional vehicle restrictions apply near the old Coast Guard property.Motorized vehicles and golf carts are also prohibited from passing through the gate into the old Coast Guard property at the eastern end of the island toward the Morris Island Lighthouse.

Protect the Dunes and Sea Turtles

Protecting Folly Beach's natural environment is especially important. Stay off the sand dunes and keep children and pets away from them. Dunes may not be damaged, altered, leveled, or removed, and access onto the dunes is prohibited except where specifically permitted on designated walkovers.

Sea oats and other protected vegetation must also be left undisturbed. Damaging or destroying sea oats can result in a significant fine, while disturbing a sea turtle nest is a federal offense.

Please keep all wedding decorations, guests, and pets away from marked turtle nests and dune areas.

No Balloons or Plastic Streamers

Balloons and plastic streamers are not permitted on the beach. When planning your ceremony décor, choose options that are safe for the coastal environment and can be completely removed after the event.

Vendors Must Be Licensed

All vendors working at a Folly Beach wedding must have the required business license with the City of Folly Beach. Couples should confirm that their wedding vendors have the appropriate licensing before the event.

Planning a Beautiful and Responsible Folly Beach Wedding

A beach wedding is a wonderful way to celebrate your special day while enjoying the natural beauty of Folly Beach. By following the local regulations, keeping the beach accessible to everyone, and protecting the dunes and wildlife, you can enjoy a memorable ceremony while helping preserve this beautiful coastal setting for future visitors.

Because local requirements may change, couples should confirm current rules, permit requirements, and vendor regulations with the City of Folly Beach before their wedding date.
